Sydney has been the most friendly and sporting Olympic Games that I have ever followed. Even from the distance of television, it has been obvious that the facilities have been suberb and the numbers of the spectators for all events far greater than any previous games.

Although I am from Melbourne, I must admit that these Sydney Games have been just about the best yet. But it should not be forgotten that Barcelona did a pretty good job too. Atlanta was a disaster (Melbourne had bid for the 1996 games so it gives me much pleasure in saying that!). It was a great advertisement for my country. We are a laid back, humorous bunch down here without hundreds of years of tradition to tie us down. I think that came across throughout the Games, particularly in the opening and closing ceremonies. I know you Poms like to have cracks at us for being uncivilised etc, but I am sure plenty of you, without admitting it, wish you were down here.

Of course it was. From the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony it was breathtaking - much better then Atlanta. Well done Sydney, well done Australia. You showed the world how to party.

As a "Sydneysider" it would appear that I am just a tad prejudiced in my view, but I am proud of the seemingly effortless way in which the games unfolded and were executed - a sure sign that they were extremely well planned - and the honest and genuine friendliness of all the volunteers and locals. I am sure that all Olympic Games weave a special magic for those who attend and for those who participate in them, but these games in Sydney really were magnificent.
