PIER ONE PARKROYAL

Opening late last year, Pier One Parkroyal (Pier 1, Walsh Bay) at Dawes Point, just by the side of the Harbour Bridge, takes its name from the 1913 wharf building it occupies. Of the 160 rooms, 64 have views of the bridge: the remainder look out on to Walsh Bay and are all individual, not least because the building is heritage listed and contains many of the original wooden beams and pillars still in place. A glass-floor lobby looks out on to the water with muslin drapes creating the sensation of being on a boat.

RUSHCUTTERS HARBOURSIDE

Rushcutters Harbourside (100 Bayswater Rd, Rushcutters Bay) is a 260-room boutique hotel right where the sailing events in the Olympics will take place. It's affordable (rooms from £56), has great views of the park alongside, and with its valet parking is perfect for those who want to explore further afield by car. The hotel also has Bistro Mars (00 612 9361 3000), the latest restaurant from the ubiquitous Neil Perry, whose Rockpool in the Rocks and Wockpool at Darling Harbour have proved so popular. Bistro Mars has a French slant and a wonderful dining room. Book, even if you are staying at the hotel.
Westin Sydney

WESTIN SYDNEY

The 417-room Westin Sydney (1 Martin Place, from £140) is part of the revamp of the GPO building. Rooms are either "heritage" in the old building, or in the tower but both come with contemporary furniture. Windows in the tower bedrooms allow the occupant to watch television from the bathroom.

Ritz-Carlton

The 125 rooms and 15 suites are decorated with heirloom furnishings and feature French doors, most with private balconies.
