KELLY HACKMAN

Kelly Hackman, now 19, came to prominence when she finished second overall at the Honeywell International in 1997. A year later, she finished third overall at the English championships in Liverpool and, on her international debut, she contributed to England winning the silver medal in the team event. Last year, Kelly won the Burrel Trophy for the highest score on the floor exercise at the British team championships. The team qualified for the Olympic Games at the world championships in Tianjin, China, and this year Kelly was a member of the European championship team that finished seventh. At the British championships in Guildford in July, she won the bronze medal overall, the beam and floor exercises.

FINAL WEEK
Date: September 10

The moment I've been waiting for

Well, I am finally here in Sydney. It seems as if I have been waiting half my life for this moment, and yet the wait continues with still a week to go before my competition. The Village is great; there are still lots more people to arrive but it is filling up by the day and the atmosphere is growing.

It is really exciting to meet so many different people, what with the 7ft tall ladies and the 20st men wandering around, I feel a touch on the small side. I seem to have developed an obsessive friendliness towards everyone and I can't help saying hello to everyone that I meet regardless of whether they understand me or not!

Having come here straight from the holding camp in Brisbane, it means that I didn't have to worry about acclimatising or jet-lag, which is a real bonus. It is a little colder here than Brisbane but not noticeably.

Now I just can't wait for the competition. In the next few days the team will go and view the competition arena to prepare our minds for the set-up. Also, we will have a practice competition on the podium where judges will be watching. It is important that we show what we can do here as first impressions are all-important.

Training starts again soon but I am just so happy to be here and my aim now is to compete to my very best and to enjoy every minute of the Sydney Olympics.
