Weightlifters do not qualify as individuals but as members of national teams and therefore can be substituted within their national team even if they were among the lifters who helped their nation to qualify. Results at the 1999 world championships and regional championships, as well as wild cards chosen by the International Weightlifting Federation, go towards the selection of the 176 men and 74 women who will compete in Sydney.
