DIMAS LIFTS GOLD
Pyrros Dimas of Greece won the Olympic gold, his third in successive Olympics, in 85-kilogram weightlifting with a total of 390kg. Marc Huster of Germany won the silver and George Asanidze of Georgia the bronze.
Dimas, light-heavyweight champion in Barcelona and Atlanta,
won an enthralling battle in which the three medallists
finished tied on the same weight of 390kg.
In such cases the lightest athlete wins and Dimas, the
great showman of men’s weightlifting, had weighed in at 84.06kg to Marc Huster’s 84.22kg and George Asanidze’s 84.70. He becomes only the second weightlifter in history to win three gold medals.
