RULES IN BRIEF Swimming caps are compulsory Flotation devices are not permitted Wetsuits are forbidden if the water temperature is above 20C Wetsuits are compulsory if the water is below 14C A decision on wetsuits is taken by officials if the water is between 14 and 20C Wetsuits must not be more than 0.5cm thick Cyclists must wear helmets and something that covers their torso Runners must wear shoes and must have their torso covered Time penalties are incurred for cutting corners during the swim around a triangular course Cyclists may only get off their bikes in cases of a fall or puncture Competitors cannot impede other competitors, or interfere with another competitor's equipment, in the transition area Nudity or indecent exposure is forbidden, even when changing is involved
