A total of 100 competitors - 52 men and 48 women - will compete in Sydney. Four places in each division were granted to the best at an Olympic qualifying tournament in July 1999. Two more places per division go to winners and runners-up at regional qualifying tournaments in Asia, Europe and Pan-America, and winners of each division in Africa's qualifying tournament also earn a place in Sydney. Australia, as host, gets a place in each division plus one wildcard entry.
