TAKING PART
There will be 86 men and 86 women competing in men's and women's singles
and doubles. In singles, the 20 players at the top of the world rankings
qualify automatically. Although three players per nation can enter singles, only
two per nation are allowed to be chosen from the top 20 world rankings.
Continents then choose 40 other players, 11 each from Asia and Europe, six
each from Africa and Latin America and three each from North America and
Oceania. At least three more players qualify at a tournament hosted
specifically for that purpose, while Australia, as host, gets one place in
each event. The continents then also choose 22 more players for the
doubles tournament, six each from Europe and Asia, three each from Africa and
Latin America and two each from North America and Oceania. Again, the two (in
this case pairs) per nation rule applies.
