THE TAKING PART
The 400 judoka, of which about 230 are men, qualify through their national teams; the best eight performers in each division at the 1999 world championships earn qualification for their countries although they can be replaced by other individuals chosen by national federations. Asia, Africa, Pan-America, Europe and Oceania also receive a proportional number of qualifications, while Australia, beyond its normal slot in the continental rounds, gets seven extra berths as host nation.
