The top seven teams at the 1999 men's handball world championships qualified for Sydney. They are Sweden, Russia, Yugoslavia, Spain, Germany, France and Egypt. Australia, as host, gets an automatic place, while four other teams qualified by winning regional qualifying tournaments. The same applies for women, although only five teams qualified at the 1999 women's handball world championships.
