RULES IN BRIEF

  • Each rally begins with a player serving the ball into the opponents' court
  • Each team is allowed to touch the ball three times before it must be returned to the opponents' courts
  • Players must not hold the ball when they touch it, nor can they hit the ball twice in a row, but they can hit the ball with any part of the body
  • A rally is lost upon a score, when the ball goes out of play or when a player touches the net
  • The team that wins a rally serves for the next rally
  • Partners take turns to serve but one player continues to serve until his or her team loses a rally
  • Players may serve overarm or underarm, with their fists, open hands or arms
  • Players must serve from behind the end line but can land inside the court from a serving leap
  • Only the serving team can score, each hit worth one point, which a defending team can only win the right to serve
  • Players can attack from any position on their side of the court
  • No substitutions are allowed
  • Only 12 seconds' rest is allowed between rallies
