The 12 men's teams and 12 women's teams that will take part in Sydney, include the winners of the 1998 world championships and Australia, which as host nation gets automatic entries for both events. The success rate of each one of five continental regions (Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Oceania) at those world championships also determines how many went through to a qualifying tournament to decide which teams fill the remaining ten places in Sydney.
