RULES IN BRIEF

  • At the serve, the shuttle must be hit from below the server's waist and the racket head must be below the height of the server's hand
  • Both feet must stay on the ground at the serve
  • Shuttles must be between 6.4cm and 7cm long, and weigh between 4.74g and 5.5g.
  • A shuttle that lands on a boundary line is considered in bounds.
  • A player must not hit a shuttlecock until it has crossed over the net into his or her side of the court.
  • A player's racket can cross over the net in the follow-through motion after a shot.
  • A let is called when a shuttle gets caught on the net during play. The rally is then replayed.
  • A fault is called if a player swings and misses while serving.
  • It is illegal to serve before the receiver is ready though if the receiver returns then the shuttle is considered in play.
  • It is forbidden to shout or make gestures at opponents.
  • Players may take no more than 90 seconds rest between the first and second games, and no more than five minutes between the second and third games.
