There were mixed fortunes for Britain’s men and women players. Julia Mann stormed into the last 16 of the women’s singles with a 11-4, 11-7 win over Maja Pohar, of Slovenia, and Richard Vaughan had a first round win over Boonsak Ponsana, of Thailand, triumphing 15-8, 15-12.
But Peter Knowles and Julian Robertson crashed out of the men’s doubles, losing 15-4, 15-8 to Dong-Soo Lee and Yong-Sung Yoo, of South Korea. Chris Hunt, who damaged knee ligaments during his first round mixed doubles match with Donna Kellogg yesterday, has withdrawn from the tournament and has been replaced in the men’s doubles by Knowles.
Simon Archer and Joanne Goode, good bets to win a medal, survived a scare today to keep their championship hopes alive with a 15-17, 15-11, 15-7 victory over Jon Holst-Christensen and Ann Jorgensen, of Denmark.
Kelly Morgan also dropped the first game in her singles match with Wai Chee Louisa Koon, of Hong Kong, but recovered well over the next 24 minutes en route to a 8-11, 11-3, 11-1 success.
